Thuỵ Huỳnh Thái

Born and raised in Sài Gòn, Việt Nam, Thuỵ now settles and works in Tkaronto as an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, documentarian, and production designer. From a young age, she explored various forms of visual and performance art as an outlet for self-expression. At 15, she moved to Canada with her family, where she embraced her Queerness and Trans-feminine identity for the first time. Since September 2022, Thuỵ has been pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Through formal experiments with the cinematic form, Thuỵ has consistently made it her mission to push the boundaries of filmmaking. From blending documentary with performance art, music production, and mixed media, to working exclusively with Mini DV tapes and 16mm celluloid, she has developed a uniquely personal yet specifically Vietnamese style of creating Image Arts, telling intimate stories about the complexities and beauty of the Queer & Vietnamese existence. Thuỵ's latest work, titled Thiếu, Nữ (Girl), is an experimental documentary short film, conceptualized as a final letter to her pre-transition body, and her family, before secretly starting Hormone Replacement Therapy. The film most recently screened at the TIFF Lightbox as an Official Selection of the 35th Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival's programme: "Shorts: Local Heroes".
